Boatbuilding in Asia 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Boat and ship building in Asia and other parts of the world is more cost effective than it is in western countries, mainly because of low labour and shipyard costs. Even boats which are built in America or Europe in mass production may be considerably cheaper here. Surprisingly, they can be better quality as well. But the main advantage lies in building custom designed boats. In western countries custom built boats are only affordable either with plenty of money or when self-made.
Boatbuilding in Asia often needs a bit more patience than in Europe or America. You cannot expect western hurry! But you can expect a quality product to a very good price. Besides low labour and shipyard costs, many materials are cheaper due to advantageous tax laws. Basic materials and fitting are a fraction of Western prices.
The following are particularly beneficial:
Building with beautiful teak / cedar / rosewood etc or interiors finished in varnish or French polish.
Projects with a high rate of handmade work such as steel round bilge.
Vynilester or epoxy resin 'composite' hand lay-up with fabrics such as Kevlar and carbon fibre.
The main advantages become apparent in entirely custom building; for example, a deck plan may be discussed with the builder and modified if necessary to fulfill unforeseen requirements. Even after testing it is possible to make modifications, should they be necessary, without driving up costs too unreasonably.
